From the advance reviews:

“Saylor is an excellent guide through this fascinating underworld. Superb historical fiction.” —Booklist (starred review)

“Toga alert! Saylor resumes the family saga he began in Roma...With the same solid historical research, this new hefty and entertaining installment should please fans of the first volume and draw new readers...Historical events provide plenty of depraved details and comparisons that beg to be drawn to today; lions and gladiators in the arena, volcanic eruptions, live burials, and master illusionists abound to fire up any number of dinner conversations....Recommended for anyone who enjoys Roman history.”—
Library Journal

“Saylor, well known for his Roma Sub Rosa historical mysteries, switched gears for his bestselling Roma and now continues the history of ancient Rome from A.D. 14 to 141 with a hefty tome of the Pinarius family...Succeeding generations of Pinarii will enjoy the favor of Trajan and Hadrian, but will suffer from the cruelty of Tiberius, the madness of Caligula, the depravity of Nero, and the murderous paranoia of Domitian. Saylor also vividly describes how the family survives the volcanic destruction of Pompeii, the burning of Rome, and the persecution of Jews and Christians...the ending...[may] signal another volume to come in this grand series.” —

Steven has a new short story in the multi-genre anthology Warriors, edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois. “The Eagle and the Rabbit” is set in 146 B.C., as Roman slave traders track down the last scattered survivors after the destruction of Carthage. Reviewers cite it as one of the best stories in the 726-page collection (FantasyLiterature.com; TrueReview) and “not to be missed” (BSCreview.com). Coincidentally, there’s another tale about Rome v. Carthage in the anthology, “The Triumph” by Robin Hobb, plus new stories by Diana Gabaldon, Peter S. Beagle, Joe Haldeman, Joe R. Lansdale, Lawrence Block, Robert Silverberg, and many more. ROMA
The Novel of Ancient Rome

Spanning a thousand years, and following the shifting fortunes of two families though the ages, this is the epic saga of Rome, the city and its people.

Drawing on history, legend, and recent archaeological discoveries, Roma gives new life to the drama of the city’s first thousand years — from the founding of the city by the ill-fated twins Romulus and Remus, through Rome’s astonishing ascent to become the capital of the most powerful empire in history. Roma recounts the tragedy of the hero-traitor Coriolanus, the capture of the city by the Gauls, the invasion of Hannibal, the class struggle between patricians and plebeians, and the death of Rome’s republic with the triumph, and assassination, of Julius Caesar.

Witnessing this history, and playing key roles, are descendants of two of Rome’s first families, the Potitius and Pinarius clans. One is the confidant of Romulus. One is born a slave and tempts a Vestal virgin to break her vows. One becomes a mass murderer. And one becomes the heir of Julius Caesar. Linking the generations is a mysterious talisman more ancient than the city itself.
